This can be attributed to our ignorance or unwillingness to accept new technology developments and ideas. A good example of these mistakes is the widespread use of electricity. 

For as long as we have recorded the history of mankind, there is very little we can do to change the future. In fact, some areas have already changed so much that we cannot even begin to understand the current state of affairs. To this day, we continue to ignore or even refuse certain technological advancements. 

If you think about it, electricity is one of the most important technologies of today and was at the center of a big revolution in the 20th century. During the second half of the 20th century, people had to make a lot of sacrifices in order for them to obtain electricity. Today, many people are still not able to get the necessary amount of electricity for their personal safety and well-being. 

I do not necessarily mean that electricity was the only obstacle between us and technology. It was only one aspect of the equation. 

Electricity has done its fair share of amazing things since then and although we may still not have fully grasped all of those aspects, we have made great strides and advancement along with electricity. The following are five major examples of how technology continues to shape society.

The technology internet.

Even though the Internet is by far the biggest innovation of today, no other technology would match the impact that it has been on society. According to an August 2013 study conducted by Cisco Systems, “The average U.S. broadband download speed grew from 3500 Mbps to more than 4300 Mbps to 6200 Mbps by 2010.” That growth rate is staggering considering this is just the start. As we go further back, there is a reason for this drastic leap in speeds. What’s more, according to another May 2015 study by Northeastern University.

The percentage of Americans who say they can’t listen to sound, is on track to reach an historic high of 18% of adults in 2011, up from 7 percent in 2007 and 7 percent in 2000.” You will also notice that I am not saying that everybody has gone crazy over hearing music. Rather, today over 90% of American adults listen to music via radio/internet connections. Since the invention of the first radio signal, we have continually worked hard to improve on just listening to sound and improving how we can listen to our favorite songs. 

We have developed countless skills to listen to music and improve on improving our audio capabilities, which is something we never truly thought we could do before the invention of the radio. These skills and abilities have now started shaping society into what we know and do today. 

The next steps of advancing in terms of communication are the creation of podcasts/movies, which will be heavily reliant upon advances in the field of technology. 

There is already proof that this technology advancement will positively affect society: “With the popularity of podcasting and movies and streaming, there will likely be an increase in the number of young people with access to computers and smartphones, a direct result of the availability of such devices. 

There will also be an expansion in the percentage of middle income families with computers (from 13% today to 25% by 2030),” says Dr. James McPherson of Stanford University. Mc Pherson goes on to note how “It is clear that advances in AI and machine learning will reshape the traditional media landscape, both locally and through digital media marketing.

As companies like Netflix move toward adopting artificial intelligence that allows viewers to see content without having to engage with it, businesses seeking out ways to attract more millennials and Gen X will evolve their strategies to accommodate this trend. 

This means that our ability to learn, grow and socialize will continue to increasingly depend on our level of education and abilities. With the increasing popularity of these programs, people across the globe will be increasingly using online media to interact with each other. From concerts, TV shows and films using virtual reality to social networking sites like Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat and YouTube, our interaction with each other will become very interesting and realistic with innovations in technology.

Technology Sensors.

Before all of that, one of the most disruptive changes that were brought about by modern technology was the introduction of sensors. Sensors are used by almost every device today measures vital information in real time. Whether it is water pressure, blood oxygen levels, body temperature or heart rate, our whole lives are dictated by the amount and quality of information we receive. 

While not immediately apparent, the application of sensor technology will be enormous. Many businesses are currently creating products that utilize these types of sensors for monitoring medical conditions and environmental conditions. Medical professionals currently have much better control of their medical patients because sensors are constantly working to detect bodily signs and conditions. On top of that, in the military, sensors have already proven to be useful in a variety of situations. 

It all comes down to how this technology will affect society. When you are able to monitor your health, what would prevent you from taking risky measures? For instance, when someone is going through a stressful event? Are there any things that could help us avoid being taken advantage of? 

Is there anything that the government can do to stop the abuse of their citizens? These questions remain unanswered, but the answer is obvious: yes, there will remain abuses. But how can we prevent this? Well, there is some basic science in how to stop those abuses. 

One of the main theories has started using neural network technology. Now, I do not know if this theory will come true, but so far, neural networks have proved to be incredibly accurate and effective. Essentially, neurons are biological cells that have receptors and send electrical impulses.

Neural networks are complex systems that use artificial intelligence to identify patterns, make predictions and conduct analysis. Neuro networks are able to take data and provide recommendations based on historical trends, personal habits, lifestyle and specific circumstances and compare and contrast the data so that it can determine what we should be doing. 

This technique helps the brain focus on different parts of the brain while controlling emotions and behaviors. Although it may seem strange, neuro networks are already starting to play a huge role in the world; just look at Amazon Echo (if you have not already heard about it) and Google Home. 

These two systems are actually trained using neural networks that mimic the human brain. Some experts believe that even our own brains may be becoming smart enough that we will soon be predicting our actions based on past situations or even the news of the present. So if we hope to prevent abuse today, perhaps we should utilize this technology to our benefit tomorrow. Until we realize what all of these potential applications are, they will be a significant part of modern society. All in all, we cannot deny that the invention of the internet and advanced sensors and technologies is changing society through constant refinement.

Conclusion.

I have shown that in even the toughest crises in history, there has been tremendous progress. Humanity has advanced far and most importantly we have progressed steadily. Even though we may still not grasp all of the latest applications and benefits of technology today, we should continue to strive to be better today than we were yesterday. 

Because that is what society is after and what we all desire. Perhaps we will all agree that we as a species are destined to always put others first. Just as in nature, we must protect ourselves and our fellow beings in order to survive. However, I have not yet seen proof that the “sensors/neural nets” of technology today or what is possible and what is not yet. 

What is more, I do not see a way I can ever predict whether the idea of neural nets will work. If they do, why don’t we use them today to protect ourselves against abuse? Who knows, they may just turn the tables sooner rather than later. Regardless, some things that we have yet to fully understand about neural nets do not help in preventing abuse, but I am confident this will eventually come to pass. 

Like it has in the case of neural nets (to a point), the concept will prove useful in protecting the innocent today and the innocent future generations. And we will get to explore how and even just how these technologies will prevent abuse in real life.

Overall, I continue to believe in humankind’s capacity to push forward in the name of happiness, beauty, love and compassion. Only time will tell but what I do know is that as humans we will come together to discover what makes us uniquely unique and ultimately develop stronger mechanisms and methods to protect ourselves and others.
